Martin Lakos
Division Director | Macquaire Private Bank

Martin has been a prominent media spokesperson for Macquarie for over 15 years, regularly appearing as an economic and market commentator on major Australian networks, CNBC Asia, and Bloomberg. Known for his ability to clearly explain complex economic issues and market trends, Martin addresses a wide range of topics from macroeconomics and current trends to interest rates, investor strategy and what's happening in key global markets. With a financial career spanning over 44 years, he started on the Australian Stock Exchange trading floor in 1979 and has held senior roles at Macquarie since 1994, becoming a Division Director in 2006. He is also a senior investment adviser with Macquarie’s Private Bank and actively supports not-for-profit groups, including Epilepsy Action Australia and the Aust. Stockbrokers Foundation. Property Think Tank Sydney 2025 Key Insights

The 2025 Sydney Property Think Tank gathered industry experts, policymakers, and thought leaders to discuss Australia's property market, focusing on policy, pricing, and planning.

Nerida Conisbee, Chief Economist at Ray White, highlighted the disparity between supply and demand, with NSW needing over 57,000 new homes last year but delivering fewer than 46,000. High construction costs and labour shortages hinder affordability.

Jonathan Wolf and Matthew Daniel emphasised the need for planning reform and skilled migration. Modular construction and standardised designs were suggested as solutions.

The panel agreed that increasing supply and minimising regulatory barriers are key to achieving affordability.
