Briarna Stiff

Senior Associate

Briarna has extensive experience in general liability, professional indemnity, CTP and commercial litigation. She has been a member of the insurance team at Colin Biggers & Paisley since 2016 and became a senior associate in 2022.

Overview

Prior to joining Colin Biggers & Paisley, Briarna worked for three years at a large Australian insurer in a claims officer role, managing a portfolio of injury claims. This experience provided Briarna with a practical understanding of the operational side of insurance companies and enables her to tailor her claims management to assist her clients to meet their key performance indicators.

Briarna brings compassion and empathy to her practice working with allied health professionals when they are faced with responding to regulatory complaints with the AHPRA, ACTHRC, HCCC, HPCA and the insured's respective Councils to name a few. Briarna has received a number of accolades for her patience and overturning difficult situations whereby an insured is facing conditions or suspension and has successfully reduced the outcome to no further action with the insured's governing body by both the submissions and providing guidance on the insured's presentation. Briarna enjoys the challenge and is known for giving both her insurer clients and insureds time and carefully worded advice.

Briarna works with the employment practices liability team to support their compliance with insurer's requirements including determining indemnity and adequate reserving. Briarna adopts the ethose of her insurer clients, ensuring that her litigated matters are resolved appropriately and early when there is exposure and it is warranted in an attempt to save costs for both the insurer and insured. Briarna's litigated matters include assisting landscape designers, real estate agents, psychologists, building and pest inspectors, dance studios, dentists, beauty therapists and tattoo artists just to name a few.

Briarna has completed three secondments in the claims department of a major local professional indemnity insurer. Briarna takes this experience seriously and ensures that it is embodied into her practice not just to maintain the rapport for the insurer client but ensures it is transferred to resolving matters practically and cost effectively for the insured.

Briarna was admitted to practice on 22 April 2016 in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and is also admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia. Briarna holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from University of New England.
